A song for my mother

“Mama, mama you know I love you
Oh you know I love you
Mama, mama you’re the queen of my heart
Your love is like
Tears from the stars
Mama, I just want you to know
Lovin’ you is like food to my soul”

My mother and I didn’t always see eye to eye when I was younger. In high school, there were periods of time when I felt like I didn’t like her because she didn’t allow me to do much. On top of that, I had to babysit my sister because she had to work extra hard to support us as a single parent. In my child like way, I resented the fact that my mother couldn’t buy many material things. I was jealous of some of the kids at school and how they had two parent homes and were seemingly able to afford the cool clothes and cars.  The many arguments, the groundings, and the beat downs (yes, I said beat downs…lol)that occurred.  I learned early that I couldn’t be like those kids on t.v. that tell their moms that they hate them. I tried that once and my mom smacked the spit out my mouth. Needless to say, I never said that again but I digress.

I didn’t appreciate how strict my mother raised me until I left the house to go to college and subsequently graduate school. My mother instilled a discipline and a drive that is still present ’til this day. In addition, I have realized what a blessing my mother didn’t allow me to run the streets–who knows what I could have been up to now. And man oh man, I didn’t appreciate those hot meals she made sure I had every night. Calling my mother the first year of graduate school and asking her how to bake chicken was priceless.

And though to this day we don’t see eye to eye on everything or understand each other all the time, I know she loves me. I know that no matter what, my mother will be there for me and won’t judge me.  I cherish the fact that my mother made sure to always keep the lines of communication open between us.

In summary, I think Boyz 2 Men got it right with their “Song For Mama“. That expresses how I feel about my own mother in a much more beautiful and touching way:

You taught me everything
And everything you’ve given me
I always keep it inside
You’re the driving force in my life, yeah
There isn’t anything
Or anyone I can be
And it just wouldn’t feel right
If I didn’t have you by my side

You were there for me to love and care for me
When skies were grey
Whenever I was down
You were always there to comfort me
And no one else can be what you have been to me
You’ll always be you always will be the girl
In my life for all times

Chorus:
Mama, mama you know I love you
Oh you know I love you
Mama, mama you’re the queen of my heart
Your love is like
Tears from the stars
Mama, I just want you to know
Lovin’ you is like food to my soul

You’re always down for me
Have always been around for me even when I was bad
You showed me right from my wrong
Yes you did

And you took up for me
When everyone was downin’ me
You always did understand
You gave me strength to go on

There was so many times
Looking back when I was so afraid
And then you come to me
And say to me I can face anything
And no one else can do
What you have done for me
You’ll always be
You will always be the girl in my life

My mom and me (the child she is holding…lol)
